Pick the finish before you print
Finishing is not a step you add at the end - it changes how the part should be printed. A part for mirror polishing needs machining stock and no support scars on visible faces; a part for PVD needs a surface with no trapped powder and no blind holes.
PVD coating
Gold, gunmetal, black and bronze. Wear resistant, does not flake like electroplating.
PVD specs → TextureSand blasting
Uniform matte texture that hides layer lines and preps the surface for coating.
Blasting specs → BatchVibration polishing
Removes layer lines and rounds edges on hundreds of small parts at once.
Vibro specs → GlossMirror polishing
Hand-worked to a reflective, jewellery-grade surface before PVD.
Polish specs →Which finish suits which part
| Part type | Recommended route |
|---|---|
| Jewellery, medallions, keychains | Mirror polish, then PVD gold / black / gunmetal |
| Eyewear frames and wearables | Vibration polish, then PVD with a matte or gloss top |
| Functional industrial parts | Sand blast - uniform, hides layer lines, no cosmetic risk |
| Batches of 200+ small parts | Vibration polish - the only route that scales economically |
| Architectural and display models | Sand blast, or polish plus a clear protective coat |
| Mould inserts and tooling | Machined and polished functional faces, no cosmetic coating |
Sequences matter: blasting is applied before PVD, polishing before PVD, and vibration polishing can either be the final finish or the preparation for a mirror polish.
